Our first publication belongs to our Landmark Library collection.

Democracy and Education, by John Dewey, explores why each child learns best when education is built around their personal interests and grounded in the world around them.

While some critics today mistakenly fault author John Dewey for factory-style schooling, in fact his philosophy was closer to what we now call child-led learning or democratic schooling.

First published during the Progressive Era, in 1916, Democracy and Education invigorated a world that was tired of rugged individualism and industrial robber barons. Student teachers have learned from it for many decades. Now, in this time of digital robber barons, the book is for everyone who wants to renew our democracy and nurture enterprising citizens.

This Mulled Press Landmark Library edition is a clean rendition of the early versions of Dewey’s text. It preserves idiosyncrasies in spelling that highlight his thoughtful personality.

Readers can jump into the artfully formatted, clearly marked chapters and sections that interest them, and consider how to write their own chapters going forward.
